A rumour is like a fire. You might think you’ve extinguished it but one creeping, red tendril, one single wisp of smoke is enough to let it leap back into life again. Especially if someone is watching, waiting to fan the flames ...

There’s nothing to trace Anna back to her old life. Nothing to link her to the ‘incident’.
At least that’s what she thinks … until the whispers start up again. As time begins to run out on her secrets, Anna finds herself irresistibly drawn to the tale of Maggie, a local girl accused of witchcraft centuries earlier. A girl whose story has terrifying parallels to Anna’s own…
The compelling YA debut from Laura Bates, founder of the Everyday Sexism Project and bestselling author of Girl Up.
The Burning is a book that discussed a lot of important issues such as sexual harassment, slut-shaming, cyberbullying, bullied by people around her and double standard - especially for us the girls, women. These things are still happening in real life. I was already intrigued by the story right from the very first page and I believe it will be an amazing book which is definitely true.
"Fire is a thousand times more deadly than a tiger. It can't be stopped with a bullet, or a fence. It destroys everything in its path."
The Burning's story from Anna's point of view which she tells us of things that had happened to her and how she needs to tackle and handle the situation together with her mother. The pain, the hurt that Anna has to face as if I could feel it. It was devastating. How could you do that to her? Anna and her mother moved from Birmingham to Scotland to build a new life following the nude photo of her have been leaked and spread across social media. She was devastated and sad and hurt and angry with the rumour that has spread widely about her and somehow it starts to resurface again in her new school.
The story started slow and I kept on wondering, 'what has happened to Anna? Why she moved? Who is Anna? Why is she has no phone?' and then the story slowly starts to reveal the answers that I'm looking for. Honestly, I like Laura Bates' writing. Laura has sparked the curiosity in me that I could not put the book down and how she discussing the important issues in this book makes it even more spectacular. 'Cause The Burning is indeed an important read. Although, the part on Maggie's story was a little bit draggy and kind of boring me but I guess it was okay as some of the aspects I find it quite the same to Anna's story. Maggie's story does have a connection with Anna.
"Because fire is sneaky. You might think you've extinguished it, but one creeping red tendril, one single wisp of smoke is enough to let it leap back to life again. Especially if someone is watching, waiting to fan the flames."
The Burning is definitely a real page-turner, the author written important issues that affect girls and women in real life. It is a poignant and powerful story. This book needs to be read by everyone.
