Synopsis
On the goldfields of 19th century Australia, two very different girls are trying to escape their past. English governess Violet Hartley has fled from England after a scandalous liaison. Now she is angling for a rich husband and a new life. Little Cat is fleeing from her home in Southern China after killing the powerful old man who tried to rape her. Disguised as a boy, she joins the huge Chinese workforce on the goldfields of South Australia. But the son of the murdered man is on her trail, intent on vengeance and Violet Hartley becomes first suspicious, then jealous of the delicate looking Chinese boy.
Little Cat's family running a silk business which she finds intolerable to what she been designated to do upon working with the family business they have. However, Little Cat holds a huge terrible secret which leads her migrating to Australia and disguise as a boy in blue trousers. Meanwhile, Violet Hartley, who came from England migrating to Australia land a job to teach two Wallace children. Reasons she flew to Australia was to escape from the problem that occurs back in her homeland. Though she was looking for security and safety in a new land, things didn't work as her plan which then she met Little Cat and together both of them embark their journey together.
The Boy with Blue Trousers is told in two alternate POV between two female characters which I find it very interesting. Although, historical fiction is my new favourite genre but I have to be honest with you that it takes me a little bit of time to warm up my reading engine to get into the story along with the characters. It wasn't easy but I enjoy the story despite being slow at the beginning of the story though that should not be a reason not to like this book because it is that good.
The author's writing has charmed my heart that makes my reading flow smoothly from the start to the ends of the chapter. The two female characters are really well developed. We can see the progress of them two through the chapters.
The story really brought me back to the past in the 19th century although I didn't know how it looked like but we can feel the atmosphere. How it was tough back then to face the difficulty in the phase of life especially to all these women and that makes them grew even stronger. Their journey was absolutely intense that put me at the edge of my seat. I was really engrossed with the story of this book. It is really captivating.
