It's been almost a year since Sila's mother traveled halfway around the world to Turkey, hoping to secure the immigration paperwork that would allow her to return to her family in the United States.

The long separation is almost impossible for Sila to withstand. But things change when Sila accompanies her father (who is a mechanic) outside their Oregon town to fix a truck. There, behind an enormous stone wall, she meets a grandfatherly man who only months before won the state lottery. Their new alliance leads to the rescue of a circus elephant named Veda, and then to a friendship with an unusual boy named Mateo, proving that comfort and hope come in the most unlikely of places.

A moving story of family separation and the importance of the connection between animals and humans, this novel has the enormous heart and uplifting humor that readers have come to expect from the beloved author of Counting by 7s.

I have no idea how to start my words for this book. I'm tearing up reading the book. No lies. It seriously touched my heart.

The story starts at a slow yet steady pace. The moment when Sila's mother has to go back to Turkey leaving behind Sila her father in Oregon it breaks my heart however I do understand why she has to leave because of the documentation issues thingy. The day has not been the same for both of them. One day, they met a friendly grandpa(Gio) who happened to be Sila's favourite teacher's husband. She starts having a conversation with Gio while waiting for her father's repairing Gio's truck and they bonded very quick. Knowing Sila loved the animal, Gio decided to rescue and care for the elephant at his farmhouse which brings Sila and her friend Mateo doing an internship together.

This is honestly, a heartwarming, moving story, the family love, and the friendship bonded through the story is really a wonderful one. I cried really hard when Veda the elephant gets to reunite with her family. I just can't. It makes immediately hugging all my cats. Love the stories. Definitely recommended!

The Elephant in the Room by Holly Goldberg Sloan is available at all good bookstores.
