The son of a drug king, seventeen-year-old Maverick Carter is negotiating life in Garden Heights as he balances school, slinging dope, and working two jobs while his dad is in prison. He’s got it all under control – until, that is, Mav finds out he’s a father. Suddenly he has a baby, Seven, who depends on him for everything. Loyalty, revenge and responsibility threaten to tear Mav apart, especially after the brutal murder of a loved one. So when Mav is offered the chance to go straight, it's an opportunity – in a world where he’s expected to amount to nothing – to prove he’s different and figure out for himself what it really means to be a man.
Review
Just so you know, Concrete Rose is set before The Hate You Give. I have not yet read the book but I have watched the movie. It was really good and the feeling while watching and after was indescribable. Anyhow, in Concrete Rose is as amazing as THUG and Maverick get to be in the center of the book.
Angie Thomas is honestly such an amazing writer. The way she writes it pours out all the feelings between sad, anger, happiness, heartbreaking - all in one book. As I said before, I have not read THUG so this one will be my first book by Angie Thomas. Yes, it takes some time to get used to the writing but that is not a problem at all.
Maverick Carter has to deal with a lot of things with school, working two jobs and now he knows that he has become a father, he needs to juggle up with raising his son. It is certainly not easy but he tried his best and he is the best dad.
The story follows really well. It is not fast-paced and yet, I really like all the details in this book. We can see how Maverick raising his son, trying to win back Lisa's heart, dealing with the gang and drugs. He wants to change his life for the better for his son and he needs to figure it out how it should be.
Overall, it is a really powerful, amazing, beautifully written book. I was heavily invested with Concrete Rose and really worth it.
