Synopsis

They go through both bottles of champagne, right there on the high line, with nothing but the stars over them and the rails extending to convergence in both directions. They drink and Lavinia tells Louise all the places they will go together, when they finish their stories, when they are both great writers - to Paris and to Rome and to Trieste, where James Joyce used to live, to Vienna to see the paintings, to Carnivale.

Lavinia will never go.

She is going to die soon. You know this.

thoughts

Before I begin, let's take a look at how beautiful the book cover is and I couldn't stop staring it. From what I can see on the book cover gives me a look that - the gold color interprets the luxury life of one of the characters in the book, how lavishly her life is while the black color interprets the dark things which going to happen soon in her life and a toxic friendship. This is what I see when I got the book in my hand which it gives me those thriller, mystery vibe from the book. I'm sorry if it's wrong but this is in my own opinion. Truthfully, I love the book cover also the synopsis of the story which intrigued to pick this book to read.

Social Creature is about Louise, who has a hard and really struggle with her life in which she has multiple jobs to cover her daily expenses, to pay up rent, and other things. One day, she met a girl name Lavinia, a socialite who always going to a party and spent lavishly. The two since then become really close and Lavinia invite Louise to live with her somehow it sparks something in Louise life after spending so much time with Lavinia - the greediness, become obsessed to be like Lavinia.

Let's be honest here, I don't really enjoy Social Creature as much as I thought I would maybe because I have high expectation for this book that makes feel like this(?), however, the plot is interesting with all the dark thriller vibe in it and how it makes me want to know what drove Louise to take that action and why with how Louise trying to live her life and when she befriended with Lavinia but unfortunately, it didn't give lots to me.

From the beginning of the book, I'm all excited to dive into the books and how the story itself bubble up my curiosity about Lavinia and Louise's friendship also we're talking both of them being a writer. Although I said I didn't really enjoy reading this book somehow the writing itself is unique and it drags me to continue my reading albeit I have the thoughts to stop my reading but I don't because I love how Tara Isabella Burton plays with our emotions - how it makes me mad with the characters, makes me want to know about the things happen in the book and how it leaves me with 50-50 of whether should I hate this book or to love it.

Even so, with all the emotional roller coaster I got from the books I didn't feel the connection with all the characters in the book. I have to tell you, I don't like all the characters. It just..hard to like them.

Honestly, Social Creature has interesting plots and the thriller vibes from the book, in some way, it didn't win my heart. Maybe this book is not for me but maybe for anyone else who might be loving this book. For me, it all depends on your liking and how you perceive this story but I think you should try reading the book maybe you will love reading it more than myself.
